About

Robert D. Sweeney is a trial lawyer who represents both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation matters. Bob holds two record jury verdicts in Illinois—he obtained the largest jury verdicts in Illinois history for a defamation case (in 2016) and for a retaliation case (in 2012). Bob also recently obtained a jury verdict in favor of a corporate officer who was sued for breaching his fiduciary duties after he plead guilty to felony theft from the corporation.

Accolades

While in law school, Bob was awarded the prestigious Philip H. Corboy Fellowship in Trial Advocacy and won the American College of Trial Lawyers National Championship. He is regularly invited to teach trial advocacy to both law students and practicing attorneys. He has served as an adjunct professor and head trial team coach at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Teams he has coached have achieved both national and regional acclaim.

Bob received his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame. He left the pre-med program at the University of Notre Dame because he wanted to try cases as a lawyer. Trial advocacy is his calling and he continues to follow that path with well-documented success today. He and his wife Joanne – also a partner at Sweeney, Scharkey & Blanchard – are involved in their church, St. Isaac Jogues in Hinsdale, as well as in Catholic organizations throughout Chicago and the suburbs.
